Explore Kalasan Temple through Dhammayatra Activities

Dhammayatra means a pilgrimage to holy places worthy of reverence and respect in Buddhism. Derived from two words, dhammayatra, means 'truth' (dharma), and 'in which place' (yatra). According to kemenag.go.id, the term Dhammayatra is often used when Buddhists make pilgrimages to Buddhist temples which are sacred places of Buddhism, one of the Buddhist temples in Indonesia is Kalasan Temple in the DIY Region.

Sunday, September 25, 2022, Dhammayatra activities are managed by Karangjanti Vihara. This activity was also attended by religious studies students from UIN Sunan Kalijaga, the Youth, Interfaith and Peace (YIP) Center community, and a number of academic groups of Gadjah Mada University.

The Dhammayatra session was divided into three: the first session, performing Puja and Bhavana led by Bhikkhu; the second session, followed by Pradaksina; and session 3, learning about the Kalasan Temple in greater detail.

In Session 3, the activity was guided by Mas Adit, UGM Archaeology lecturer. Mas Adit said that the origin of the temple in Kalasan was originally called Kalibening Temple. The name Kalasa Village was then given by archaeologists based on the area. He also explained that if the temple has a stupa roof, it is a Buddhist temple, while Hindu temples have amalaka roofs.

The UGM Archaeology lecturer also explained that Kalasan temple was very wide, not limited to what is seen now. "Kalasan Temple is also one of the oldest temples, this temple even stood before Prambanan Temple in the 9th century. This shows that Buddhists already existed in the Kalasan area at that time".

All participants and monks posed for a group photo at the end of the session.
