Deepening Confucianism, Religious Studies Students Visit Poncowinatan Temple

Saturday, October 01, 2022, Religious Studies students visited Poncowinatan Temple, located north of Tugu Yogyakarta. Aside from giving students an opportunity to learn about other religious traditions, this activity aims to build students' awareness in building interfaith relationships.

Klenteng Poncowinatan has the original name Kelenteng Kwan Tee Kiong, founded in 1879. Usually, it's a place of worship for adherents of three religions: Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism.

Mr. Margo, together with Mr. Eka, as the manager of the temple, said that the Poncowinatan Temple has the God of Justice "Kwan Tie Koen '' as the main deity. To the east of the main sanctuary is a worship room containing a statue of Fuk Ten Cen Sen (the housekeeper). To the north of the main sanctuary (back) there is a worship space containing a statue of Goddess Kwan Im (center), a worship space of Sidharta Buddha Gautama (on the right) and a worship space of Manjusri Bodhisattva...

Its location in the market area does not put Klenteng Poncowinatan in a bad condition. On the contrary, Klenteng Poncowinatan is maintained, managed, and cleaned every day so that the environment is so beautiful.

Led by Mr. Afifur Rochman Sya'rani, S.Ag. M.A, as a lecturer and companion, gave direction so that students foster curiosity by learning directly in the field (read: Klenteng).

The visit session to this place of worship is part of the activities of the Study Program Student Association so that students get direct experience. Hence, skills such as interpersonal relationships, negotiation, and mediation can be developed.

At the end of the session, Mr. Roni gave a message that " we should be religious in our hearts, minds, and actions. To always be grateful for the little things we get every day".

The visit session then ended with a group photo. And the students were allowed to bring "souvenirs" from Poncowinatan Temple.
