HMPS Religious Studies Students Visit Hinduism at Jagatnatha Temple, Banguntapan, Yogyakarta

Saturday, September 17, 2022, Students of Religious Studies made another visit. The visit this time was a dialogue with Hinduism at Jagatnatha Temple, Banguntapan Region, Bantul.

The visit was opened by Mr. Derry Ahmad Rizal, M.A, lecturer of Religious Studies as well as student companion. The management of Jagatnatha Temple itself was welcomed by Mr. Budi Sanyoto, who is also the curator of speakers for this forum and is part of the temple's organizing/management team.

It covered a lot of topics related to the socio-religious conditions of the Hindus living in Sorowajan and Banguntapan, particularly, and of Hindus in Yogyakarta in general. Additionally, Mr. Andi explained daily worship, divinity, and the Hindu worldview in addition to the context of Hindu life in Yogyakarta.

Jagatnatha Temple [जगन्नाथ] (Jagat = Universe; Nata = ruler) itself, historically, was built in 1967 and inaugurated in 1974. Initially, this temple was a place of worship for Hindus in the sub-district area, but in later developments it turned into the central temple in Yogyakarta (provincial area). This building was inaugurated and named Santi Sasana by Sri Sultan. In addition, Jagatnata Temple also received bronze gamelan assistance from the Director General of Religious Affairs in 2011.

Visits to places of worship of other religions are the work program of the intellectual division of HMPS Religious Studies. The visits will become a routine that will be held every two weeks. "Through visits like these, we hope to be able to study religion more closely, not only in the classroom, so we can see and learn about religious communities in action. It was great to have my friends' enthusiasm on this visit, too," explained the Intellectual Coordinator, Aviccena.

Not only Religious Studies students participated in this visit, other students also enlivened the interfaith "dialogue". Finally, certificates and souvenirs were given to both speakers, followed by a group photo.
