Mass Media in the Dynamics of Politics in Indonesia

Located at the Dian Interfidei Office on Saturday, March 25, 2023, the fourth lecture of the Interfaith School was held. On this occasion the material was presented by several speakers, namely: Mr. Subur Tjahjono (Editorial Secretary of Tempo), Imam Wahyudi (Indonesian Television Journalists Association) and Yosep Adi Prasetyo (Chairman of the Press Council 2016-2019). This lecture was moderated by Father Dr. M. Joko Lelono, facilitator of SLI XIV / Sanata Dharma University.
With the speakers coming from journalist backgrounds, participants were invited to take a deeper look at how the media influences political dynamics. The media is the spearhead of the dissemination of various information. Information can be found easily just by typing keywords on a search engine. Various types of information can be reached easily, one of which is information about politics. According to Mr. Imam Wahyudi, it is important for every mass media to collaborate in delivering political news. Especially with the election year approaching, various political news began to appear. It is possible that these news can reap various public responses.
On this occasion, the participants were able to see how media dynamics affect politics and democracy in Indonesia. Elections are a struggle for power that is conducted with regulations, norms and ethics in order to create a peaceful and civilized change of power. Highly competitive competition often leads to dishonest politics. The mass media should be able to be fair and balanced to all election participants in campaign coverage. However, we often see that there is an imbalance of news that is biased towards only one candidate. The mass media aims to encourage the election of qualified and qualified leaders to lead the government for the next 5 years.
