Sekolah Toleransi: Diversity Does Not Prevent Collaboration

Religious differences do not prevent Yogyakarta students from collaborating. For these future leaders of Indonesia, differences are a blessing and will actually strengthen the life of the nation and state in Indonesia. To understand and respect each other's beliefs, students from the State Islamic University (UIN) Sunan Kalijaga, Duta Wacana Christian University (UKDW), and Sanata Dharma University (USD) held a Tolerance School (Sekolah Toleransi). Tolerance School was held by the Religious Studies Student Association of UIN Sunan Kalijaga for two days (October 15-16, 2022) at Joglo Salak, Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta Special Region with the theme "Religion, Democracy and Pluralism". Students from Religious Studies and other study programs participated in the event.

A beautiful atmosphere greeted the participants when they got off the bus on Saturday (15/10/2022) at 09.02 WIB. Tolerance School began with a seminar session entitled "Religious Dilemmas in the Construct of Majorities and Minorities". Dr. Dian Nur Anna S.Ag., M.A., opened the discussion, followed by the presentation of two speakers, Bambang Purnama S.E., M.Si, Chairman of Majelis Luhur Kepercayaan Indonesia (MLKI) Yogyakarta, and Erham Budi Wiranto S.Th.I., M.A., Lecturer in Religious Studies at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.

The participants' enthusiasm was sparked by easy-to-understand explanations surrounded by cool air. "In fact, all humans are made of the same elements. There is no difference, the diction of majority and minority is only a political construct that has interests," said Bambang Purnama.

The call to Dzuhur stopped Bambang Purnama's presentation and he continued afterwards. The history of the construct was explained by Erham Budi, with a paper entitled "Genealogy of Majority and Minority". He presented for approximately 30 minutes. The speakers were greeted with questions before Wika Fitriana Purwaningtyas S.Ag., (Moderator) ended the session.

After dhuhr prayers and meals, the event continued with a workshop. It was started by Syaidurrahman Alhudzaifi (student president of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta). Then continued by two young lecturers (Arafat Noor Abdillah. S.Th.i., M.Ag., and Derry Ahmad Rizal M.A.). The material in this session led to the "Epistemology of the Paradigm of Religious Studies''.

"Students of Religious Studies should no longer see religion as a belief or sharia alone, but must be able to see the complexity of religion, if they see religion as sharia alone, it is better to enter the faculty of sharia," explained Arafat, followed by laughter from the audience. According to him, students of Religious Studies must be able to be an empty glass, because if students still use the Islamic paradigm, other religious material will be mental and difficult to accept.

The session was very interactive, a relaxed forum without realizing it. Question after question was answered alternately by the speakers, the speakers also gave directions to the participants before they interacted in the church on the second day of the School of Tolerance. "The church is also a place that is sacred to Christians, students of Religious Studies must maintain ethics as we sacralize the mosque," Derry explained. The workshop ended with the giving of souvenirs.

The participants were then divided into groups for a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) session to follow up and reflect on the materials they had received, guided by senior Religious Studies students as facilitators. This was followed by discussing two scriptural texts (Al-Qur'an & Bible) or commonly called Scriptural Reasoning. Some students admitted that it was their first time reading the Bible.

As the night wore on, the event became more exciting. A bonfire was lit, the participants gathered around it and sang together. This session was also filled with art performances. Poetry reading, drama, music and so on were performed by the participants. This session was also enlivened by poetry musicalization and a monologue entitled "Love of Different Religions' performed by GAZEBU (Garda Seni Budaya PMII Pembebasan). This excitement unnoticeably accelerated the hands of the clock. Participants were asked to return to rest in their respective rooms.

In the morning, after the morning prayer, the participants returned to the main yard to meditate. Participants together cultivate the soul before then exercising. The cool air free from noise brought participants to calmness, they were asked to adjust their breath and empty their minds. "The past is gone, the future is still a mystery, we are now. Feel and enjoy every breath," said Yuniar as the guide.

This session was also filled with reflections. "Diversity is a gift, but in fact humans are the same, there is no difference, all are servants of Allah, even the grass you sit on," said Nibrosi. Sholawat together ended the meditation.

After the exercise, participants were asked to hurry for breakfast and get ready to continue the School of Tolerance at S.T. Paulus Seminary, Kentungan. Paulus Seminary, Kentungan. Group photo to close the activity at Joglo Salak. Sunday (16/10/2022) at 10.00 WIB the bus arrived at the Seminary, the second day of the School of Tolerance was accompanied by students from Sanata Dharma University and Duta Wacana Christian University. The event was held in the main hall of the USD Faculty of Theology.

It began with the socialization of SIM-C (Simpul Iman Community). SIM-C is an interfaith student forum from three campus faculties, namely UIN SUKA's Faculty of Ushuluddin, USD's Faculty of Theology and UKDW's Faculty of Theology. "This forum will be revived after being suspended during the pandemic," explained Brother Bles as SIM-C representative.

The event then continued with an interfaith group discussion. This forum allowed participants to share and exchange experiences with USD and UKDW students. This group was also assigned to prepare a drama to be performed. Each group was given their own theme by the committee.

"Yes... We call group three with the theme 'the difficulty of building a house of worship'," shouted Deboora and Anggun (UKDW students) as hosts. Group three then performed their show. They demonstrated how difficult it is for minorities to build houses of worship. Show after show was performed in turn. Differences in beliefs did not hinder their collaboration. Laughter occasionally broke the silence. The judges were busy assessing their performances. Prizes have also been prepared by the committee.

"Unlike last year, this year's School of Tolerance is conceptualized systematically and gradually. Starting from understanding the material, understanding the paradigm, reflection and analysis, to the peak of implementation, namely direct interaction and collaboration with people of different beliefs," explained Fadhil, chairman of the School of Tolerance committee.

Two days passed, the dynamics of learning and fun together passed. Sunday at 16.00 WIB, the School of Tolerance activities were closed with a closing ceremony by representatives of USD, UKDW, and UIN Suka and closed directly by Ikhwanuddin, Chairman of the Religious Studies Student Association symbolically followed by applause from all participants.
