YIPC and Religious Studies Collaborate to Organize Book Review and Movie Screening

Young Interfaith Peacemaker Community (YIPC) and Religious Studies Study Program collaborated in the form of book review and movie screening, Friday, 09/12/2022. This activity is a commemoration of Human Rights Day (HAM). "Peace Messages from Millennial Peacemakers" is a book of stories from various authors containing the same message, namely how dialog among the younger generation is echoed. Likewise, a short peace film (20 minutes long) opened the dialog session, entitled "Celebrating Differences in IV BAB".

The movie explores a certain "different" identity, revealing the reality of life without denying its presence. The characters involved are represented by people with disabilities, Sapta Dharma believers, Christian students, and Muslim women of Javanese-Chinese ethnicity in Yogyakarta. Each person involved interprets and celebrates the 'diversity' they go through in a unique, distinctive, and personal way.

The book review was moderated by Anditya Restu Aji, S.I.P., M.Han with two speakers namely: Dr. Dian Nur Anna, S.Ag., M.A, as the Head of Religious Studies Study Program, and Riston Batuara, M.Th, as the Director of YIP Center.

Mrs. Dian, the first speaker, said that problems or conflicts between people are inevitable and always exist. In order to overcome these problems, especially in the interfaith context, we must develop an awareness of communicating with the "other". With good quality communication, we can contribute to efforts to build bridges of peace. Allow ourselves to be open to understanding and reduce unnecessary prejudices.

Bang Riston, his nickname, conveyed the contents of this book which is expected to help readers in opening their understanding from an interfaith perspective. Every writer, in the process of writing, requires them to explore and reopen how religion and its negative side impact their lives personally. However, through the realization that 'wounds' exist, each author finally comes to the realization to heal those wounds.

The event then continued with testimonials by movie actors and contributing authors. Mas Andika felt happy to be part of the movie. As a person with a disability, he advised those present to help people with disabilities fulfill their rights. Not to be pitied, but to be helped. Ester, one of the authors, hopes that this book will guide young people to develop open attitudes, tolerance, and understanding of one another.

Before the activity was closed with a group photo, the discussion session discussed two questions regarding the concrete steps of youth in resolving conflicts and about the history of YIPC.
