Plagiarism in Writing

It is realy unpleasent thing. the digital era, which is sos wow and complex in access to reading, has instead fostered a new culture, ehiich has poisoned the world of Indonesian literacy. Plagiarism has infected all circles, not only junior hugh school students, even the rectors of renowned universities have been recorded plagiarizing.

what is wrong with our society? what has happened in the world of Indonesian education? if ot not seriously eradicated, it will become a time bomb. which at the end will explode the building of Indonesian education and literacy.

legally, plagiarism has been spelled out in the Minister of National Education Regulation No. 17/2010.

"plagiarism is the intentional or unintentional act of obtaining or attemting to obtain credit or marks for a scientific work of another party that is recognized as his scientific work, without properly andadequately acknowledging the source"

simply put, plagiaris, is the incorporation of another person's work into one's own, with the aim of adding to the richmess or credibillity of the work without citing the souce reference. or for example, quoting someone else work, and forgetting to include the cited source, is also the same as p;agiarim. plagiarism emphasizes the inclusion of source. it has become the main key. if you don't have a house key, wouldn't the person eho enters it be considered a thief?

Plagiarism can occur, for example, due to lack of time in working in a work, which encourages taking shortcuts by copy-pasting other people's work. in addition, it may also be due to a low level of literacy and analysis of reading. or, lack od understanding of the steps in citation. another factor may be that lecturers or teachers fail to pay attention to their students. so they feel free to copy

in the world of literacy, there are at least ten types of plagiarim. First, secondary source. That is, plagiarim occurs when a researcher quotes form a primary source, but he gets the quote from a secondary source, and this secondary source is not included. Second, invalid

source, this type occurs because the source listed and the quote taken are wrong, in the sense that the quote does not match the source. Third, duplication, which is when a researcher uses work that has been made as a reference for his work, but does not include the source.

Fourth, unethical collaboration, this type occurs when several people collaborate in creating work, but they violate the agreed rules. Fifth, repetitive research, which is when a researcher uses the same data and methods in previous research, but does not include the source. Sixth, complete plagiarism or total plagiarism. Seventh, paraphrasing, is plagiarism that occurs when someone takes a quote, then paraphrases it, but does not include the source. Eighth, misleading attribution, is plagiarism for listing parties who were not involved in the creation of the work at all.

Ninth, verbatim plagiarism, which is copying and pasting ideas from other people's work, without mentioning the reference source. And finally, replication, which is plagiarism for submitting the same manuscript to several publication institutions.

Seeing so many cases of plagiarism, it made some developers to create an application that can check whether a work contains plagiarism or not. The app is called Turnitin. In the academic world, the application is the answer to how to foster a healthy literacy climate.

The government itself is also quite strict in eradicating plagiarism. Law No. 20/2003 states that anyone caught plagiarizing will be punished with a maximum imprisonment of two years or a maximum fine of two hundred million rupiah. Furthermore, in the academic world, if a student or lecturer is caught plagiarizing, the punishment can be dropout, cancellation of diplomas, or even revocation of degrees.

Then, what are the tips to overcome or avoid plagiarism?

The first step is to determine the book or reference source to be read. Underline or mark some sentences that are important to be quoted. After you have finished reading the book, focus on the marked sentences and then develop them with your own narrative, then write them into the work you want to create. After that, also include in the work the title of the quoted book, author, publisher, year of publication, place of publication, and the page of the quoted sentence.
