Taking a Deeper Look at Religious Disease of Urban Society

According to Paul B. Horton, society is defined as a collection of humans who are relatively independent, live side by side, live in a certain area, and have a culture that has the same character, and there is interaction between its members. Soerjono Soekamto adds, it can be said to be a society if there are at least two people. In its dynamics, a society is not always smooth in the sense that there must be a problem that hits, thus blocking the pace towards a safe and prosperous society. Especially urban communities, which are very heterogeneous.

In contemporary times, urban communities are commonly called urban societies. This term is related to the description of a civilization that has more or less four characteristics. Namely, a high level of internet literacy or digitalization, the easy spread of new (pop) culture, an individualistic society, and high mobility when dealing with new things. However, with this rapid development, there are also more 'diseases' experienced by urban communities, whether in the political, legal, cultural, social or other fields. And to make matters worse, religion, which is supposed to be the 'healer of sanity', is also utilized for certain interests. This is what then becomes the origin of the pathology (disease) of society. Moreover, Indonesia is a 'religious' country. When a religious issue is mentioned, it is easy to catch fire.

Among the examples of religious pathology is the later use of arguments to satisfy one's lust. Instead of looking for the true meaning, they use it to manipulate. This is what happened as in the case of polygamy. Indeed, the Prophet SAW actually allowed it. However, with some conditions that must be met. Now, because these conditions are in the information explained by scholars and are not detailed in the Quran, by some groups of polygamy 'worshipers', they are not taken. Because for them, the Quran alone is enough. Beh, that's really bad. In fact, there are many verses of the Quran that require in-depth study. As a result, women become victims of the lust of the polygamy cult.

Or other examples, such as religion being used as a field to seek votes in elections, the rise of criminalization in the name of religion, or fraud under the guise of religion such as Umrah and Hajj bureaus. All of these things are familiar in urban society. What is the reason? It is the lack of religious literacy. As experienced by Muslims, the average person living in urban areas, as a child, does not have time to study religion in depth, because the community ecosystem is less supportive. In contrast to rural communities, from childhood to adulthood, they are full of religious knowledge. This can be proven by the proliferation of Islamic boarding schools and madrasah diniyah in the villages.

To answer this problem, the key word is only one. Deepen religious knowledge. Deepen the religious literacy. This can be done by choosing the right teacher cum learning from the experts. Either by visiting religious study centers, or the religionists themselves create content such as Youtube which is interesting and can reach the wider community, especially now that it is the era of cyberspace. After the religious teachings are absorbed correctly, it will automatically form the output of religious adherents who, said Gus Mus - social piety and ritual piety. Thus, if the community has achieved and or has such a culture, the pathology that affects it will automatically leave.
