Student Achievement: Muhsin Nuralim Won 2nd Place in Psychology Essay Competition in Java Bali at Muhammadiyah Purwokerto University

"As a Religious Studies student, winning a competition in a field that doesn't seem to align with what I study everyday is very rewarding. It can challenge and deepen topics that interest me." Muhsin said, Monday, March 13, 2023

The Psychology Essay Competition was initiated by Psychology students in the framework of the 25th Anniversary of the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. There are many series of national level competitions in this Psicoversay, such as three categories of competitions: videography, posters, and essays.

Muhsin admitted that to write an essay to fit the theme was initially quite difficult. He needed to find quite a lot of ideas, then execute them into an idea that was poured into writing. The essay theme for this competition was "Creating Positive Psychology in the Era of Globalization". The term Positive Psychology was initiated by Seligman who understood that psychology is also used not only to find the causes of "sick" people, but also to explore and understand the psychology of "healthy" people.

Seligman and Csikszentmihalyi discuss three domains in Positive Psychology, namely the subjective, individual, and group levels. Muhsin wrote an essay entitled "Developing Spiritual Well-being as Resilience of Modern Lifestyle". For him, spiritual well-being is found at the subjective level in positive psychology. He uses John Wayne Fisher's model as a measuring tool for spiritual well-being. Fisher understands that humans who are spiritually well will have good quality relationships with themselves, others, nature, and God.

This essay became the second winner and was able to outperform the essay from UGM Psychology Students (3rd place). As for the first winner, it was won by students of the University of Education Indonesia (UPI).

Muhsin advised himself and his friends to be interested in developing their potential by continuing to try. "If you are not sure, just try it first"

Dr. Dian Nur Anna as the Head of Department of Religious Studies congratulated Muhsin Nuralim for his achievement. Hopefully, with more and more students participating in the competition, it can encourage other students to be able to participate in other competitions.
