Post-Conversion Interpersonal Conflict Webinar

Confucius Center held its first series of webinars with the subject matter of Mualaf Interpersonal Conflict; Study of the Mualaf Center Yogyakarta Community. This activity was held on October 8, 2020, in collaboration with the Religious Studies Study Program and the Indonesian Religious Studies Association (ASAI). In this event, the resource person was Arafat Noor Abdillah, besides being a researcher at the Mualaf Center, he is also an Alumni of the Study of Religions at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta and was moderated by Haetami, a researcher at the Confucius Center.

Arafat's explanation in the webinar was that the decision-making process carried out by converts not only has an impact on psychological conflicts, but also interpersonal conflicts with family and close relatives. This is because religion for converts becomes an identity that is very influential in adjusting to their lives.

The interpersonal conflict experienced by converts is also caused by post-conversion personality changes. Converts try to maintain their life choices in religion, but they also want to have a harmonious relationship with their previous religious environment, especially with family and close relatives. Meanwhile, the converts actually get a negative response from the family and close relatives of converts.

Hopefully this discussion can become a virtual gathering place while sharpening academic reasoning even in the current pandemic conditions, a message from Haetami in closing the webinar.
