Description This course discusses the history of the emergence and development of Confucianism as a world religion. The main materials discussed are: History of Ancient Chinese Traditions: Construction of reason & belief: geography & idealization of nature, family system, ancestor worship, art, celebrations; Political history of dynasties, ancient prophets, birth, youth, wanderings & old age, the basis of their teachings; Confucianism and the schools of thought of his time, Lao Tze, Mohism, Mencius, Hun Tzu, responses to his teachings; Holy books & their contents: Wu Cing/Ngo King (Five classical books) & their main contents, Si Shu (Four books) & their main contents, divination: Bagua & Hexagram; Confucian principles: Jen, Chun Tzu, Cheng Ming, Te, Li, Wen; Systematic teachings: a.8 confessions of faith (Pat Sim Ciam Kwi); 5 eternal qualities: 5 (Wu Chang), 5 social relations (Ngo Lun), 8 virtues (Ba De), Zhong Shu; Entry & development of Confucianism: ethnicity & culture; Religious institutions: THHK, Tri Dharma, Matakin, Relations with Walubi; Confucian religion before and after Presidential Decree No. 6 of 2000, its prospects & challenges; Places of Worship: individual & communal worship/services, religious ceremonies, Chinese New Year holidays; Taoism: its teachings & scriptures, Chinese Buddhism: its teachings & sects, its relationship with Confucianism; and, the communism revolution, the founding of the PRC, figures & modernization movements, globalization
